FAQ

About The Game of Boules

Pétanque is a French boules sport where two teams throw metal balls to land as close as possible to a small wooden target ball, the cochonnet, played on gravel, dirt, sand or grass.

Teams take turns throwing boules toward the cochonnet, aiming to land closest to it; the team with the closest boule at the end of each round scores a point for every one of their boules closer than the opponent's nearest.

Pétanque is a specific boules game; "boules" more broadly covers the whole family of related throwing games, so all pétanque is boules, but not all boules games are pétanque.

No — they're related but distinct games with different rules, ball sizes and playing surfaces, though both belong to the broader family of boules/bowling games.

Each player typically plays with three boules in singles and doubles, or two boules per player in triples, plus one shared cochonnet.

Yes, though it plays fastest and truest on firmer, flatter surfaces like gravel or hard-packed dirt; grass will slow the roll and add some unpredictability.

Competition boules are precision-made from carbon or stainless steel to exact FIPJP approved weight, diameter and hardness tolerances, while leisure boules are more affordable and made for casual, sociable play without strict regulation requirements.

The cochonnet (or "jack") is the small target ball players aim to land closest to — it's thrown first at the start of each end, and every boule is then played in relation to it.

FIPJP-approved competition boules typically measure 71-76mm in diameter and weigh 650-800g, with shooters and pointers often preferring a different balance within that range.

A dedicated bag or case protects your set between games and makes it easy to carry your boules, cochonnet and anymaccessories together — see our Bags & Suitcases collection.
